Top 10 fizzy soft drinks

Fizzy soft drinks are a staple in today's society, and they stem much further back than you may think...

In 1767, yes, that's right, over 230 years ago, the first drinkable man-made glass of carbonated water was created by Englishman, Doctor Joseph Priestley, and three years later, Swedish chemist Torbern Bergman invented a way of mass producing fizzy water with apparatus that used sulphuric acid to liberate carbonated water from chalk.

Since then, the fizzy soft drink market has become a competitive minefield, but we're here to settle the debate, once and for all.  What is the best fizzy soft drink of them all?

Here, we give you our top 10 list of fizzy soft drinks ever created, and we'll be basing this on the key criteria of taste, popularity, branding, and longevity.  Please note, we are not including 'diet' fizzy drinks, so Diet Pepsi, Diet Coke etc. will not be considered, and we are also discarding 'energy' and 'sport' fizzy drinks, so Red Bull and Lucozade won't be gracing our list.  Only the original flavours of the drink will be counted.

So, without further ado, here's the top 10...

Best fizzy soft drinks 10

10.  Tango

Tango is a soft drink originating in the United Kingdom, primarily sold in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was first launched by Corona in 1950.  It is widely regarded as the best orange flavoured fizzy drink, and although it is magnificent, it's not the top dog on this list...

9.  Iron-Bru

Irn Bru is Scotland's most popular soft drink, and by some distance. It is a bright orange, fizzy drink that tastes like other citrus-flavoured sodas with an interesting ginger kick. Irn Bru was first produced in 1901 by Scottish pharmacist Robert Barr, and it has grown to be a national treasure of Scotland.

8.  7 Up

7 Up has long been a classic lemonade, and it's rivalry with Sprite has been one of the closest in soft drink history. This American brand didn't quite manage to beat Sprite on this occasion, but it wasn't far off.

7.  Schweppes

Schweppes Tonic Water began in 1783 as the world's original soft drink. Its founder, Jacob Schweppe, was drawn to the new art of carbonating beverages. It has since gone on to become the no.1 tonic water. The fact it doesn't quite appeal to kids, is why it hasn't made our top 5.

Lilt

6.  Lilt

Lilt is manufactured by The Coca-Cola Company and sold in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Gibraltar, and the Seychelles only. The pineapple and grapefruit fizzy drink came to market in 1974, and has gone on to become a real cult classic.

fanta

5.  Fanta

Fanta was created by Coca-Cola Deutschland under the leadership of German businessman Max Keith. It has since gone on to become the best selling orange flavoured fizzy soft drink on the market.  Fanta isn't as sweet as its rival, Tango, but it does have an addictively sour kick to it.

Dr Pepper

4.  Dr Pepper

Dr Pepper was created in the 1880s by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas, and first served around 1885.  It is, by some considerable distance, the most popular cherry flavoured fizzy soft drink in history.

sprite

3.  Sprite

The king of the lemonades didn't quite have enough to challenge the big 2 on this list, but even so, it is still a colossal fizzy drink brand. Sprite was created by The Coca-Cola Company. It was first developed in West Germany in 1959.

pepsi

2.  Pepsi

Pepsi is manufactured by PepsiCo. Originally created and developed in 1893, and introduced as Brad's Drink, it was renamed as Pepsi-Cola in 1898, and then shortened to Pepsi in 1961. It is widely regarded as the top fizzy soft drink ever made... only not quite on this list ;)

Coca-Cola best fizzy soft drink

1.  Coca-Cola

Created in 1886, Coca-Cola is, without question, the absolute king of the fizzy soft drinks. Pepsi has tried, but ultimately just come short. To say Coca-Cola is a mega brand is an understatement. It is one of the biggest companies in the world. Formed just 12 years earlier than Pepsi, 'Coke' is our champion of the fizzies.
