Discover Cipher: A Great Tasting Alcohol-free Beer That Also Helps Raise Mental Health Awareness

Jam-packed with 5 all-American Hops, this 0.5% alcohol-free IPA packs some serious punch!

Beer.  We love it here in the UK.  In fact, for many of us, it doesn't get much better that sipping a chilled one on a Friday evening after a long week at work.  And although the beer and ale market is as big as ever, low alcohol products are also making their way onto the market like never before.  And here's why...

The benefits of low alcohol beer

Low alcohol beers and ales are among the fastest growing drinks on the market, and with all its pros, it is easy to see why.  Low-alcohol beer tends to have fewer calories than alcoholic beer, and choosing it over alcohol can reduce your calorie intake as part of a healthy diet.

But reducing your alcohol intake can also have greater health benefits for some more serious issues.  Over-consumption of alcohol can cause hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), which can lead to light-headedness and general weakness.

Former public house landlord, Ian Crawley says  "Drinking beer will always be a big part of British society, but what we are seeing now is a major shift in how we drink our beer.  For many of us, it's not so much about getting drunk, it's about enjoying the taste of our drink within a good social setting, without worrying about exceeding our limit."

Introducing Cipher

Cipher 'Mindful' is a 0.5% alcohol free IPA, jam-packed with 5 all-American hops; Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial, Mosaic and Simcoe. Further dry hopped along with grapefruit for added flavour, aroma and bitterness. A heavily hopped alcohol free beer that is true to the very nature of a traditional IPA. No alcohol and no compromise...it's a small abv with a big IBU.

Khaled Abdulgani, the founder and director of Cipher, gave us an insight into his thinking behind the brand. "After years of working in the industry, I quickly burnt out and became overwhelmed with sudden anxiety. I knew I was suffering from depression for the best part of a decade, and I constantly struggled to manage my mental health.  It was time for a big change."

I aim to champion great tasting alcohol free beer and raise mental health awareness along the way. After all, better minds are better times.

So, how did a low alcohol beer come to mind? "Determined to live a happier and fuller life, I decided to reduce my alcohol intake. I turned my attention alcohol-free beer, as I really wanted a tasty beer that I could enjoy, but wouldn't be detrimental to my mental health."

How it's made

Historically low alcohol beer has been made by brewing a normal beer, at standard abv, and then removing the alcohol. This involves some form of post fermentation treatment, which invariable makes the beer taste odd!

Cipher have brewed a beer with the target of it having a low abv. This means they have basically not used much malt in the brew, and the malt that is used is darker and more complex in flavour to offset the lack of base malt. This is the reason they have added lactose [milk], as otherwise it would be very thin. But apart form that it is just a normal beer, brewed with target abv of 0.5%.
