Why Am I Losing So Much Hair This Autumn?

 

Why do so many of us lose so much hair during the autumn months?

Hair loss affects more than half of us, and under no circumstance does anyone enjoy losing their hair. Hair loss can have this annoying habit of creeping up on us during certain periods of the year, and most of us have no idea why. 

There are many forms of baldness, the most common forms being pattern baldness, post-partum baldness, and seasonal baldness. Some forms of hair loss are temporary, but there are some forms of baldness that are permanent, and in most cases, cannot be reversed. 

What is seasonal shedding? 


The most common form of thinning hair that many of us face is seasonal shedding.  This is a temporary hair loss type that occurs during certain seasons of the year.  Some of us experience severe shedding during the hotter months of the year, and some people are the opposite, being more prone to shedding during the colder months. 


The most common times of the year for seasonal shedding are during spring season, and during autumn season.   • Dehydration - Believe it or not, we are more likely to be dehydrated during the colder months of the year, simply because we don't feel as thirsty as we do in the summer time. Our strands can only thrive when they are properly hydrated. 
  • Excess sweating: Again, most of us would associate sweating with the hotter months of the year, but we actually sweat a whole lot more during the autumn months. Central heating causes us to sweat, along with wearing warm clothes out in the cold. Sweating can play a key role in breakage and damage to the hair strands.

How can hair shedding be stopped? 


Unfortunately there isn't a cure or quick fix solution for any form of hair loss, whether that may be temporary or permanent, but fear not, there are a few things you can do to help reduce the thinning and maintain healthier hair growth. 

Here are some things you can do to minimise the shedding and promote thicker hair:
  • Eat high-protein foods - Your hair relies on protein to grow strong. Eating foods that are high in protein, such as meats, fish, eggs, and beans, can help strengthen your follicles.
  • Go natural - There is nothing to suggest that shampoos will treat hair loss, but certain shampoos can help keep your hair stronger and better conditioned. Avoid shampoos that use chemicals that could be harmful to your scalp. Always opt for natural and organic products.
