Football Grounds That Are in Urgent Need of Redevelopment

Football stadiums and grounds that are due to be redeveloped

Classic British football grounds that are in urgent need of developing or completely rebuilding...

The UK has some of the oldest and classic looking sports grounds in the world, but a lot of them are going through some serious wear and tear. Most of the top teams are either renovating their grounds, or knocking them down completely and building replacements.

Here, we list 7 classic football grounds that are in some urgent need of renovating, or completely rebuilding...

Anfield (Liverpool FC): Anfield Stadium (pictured above) has undergone significant redevelopment in recent years, with the expansion of the Main Stand and ongoing plans for further improvements. This was urgently needed, as the stadium was falling behind some of their main rivals, such as the Man City's Etihad and the new Spurs stadium.

Goodison Park (Everton FC): Everton are currently building a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock as a replacement for Goodison Park. Construction began in 2021, and the stadium is expected to be completed in the near future. Goodison Park will become the latest classic ground to be knocked down in favour of a new build.

Stamford Bridge (Chelsea FC): Chelsea FC has explored options for redeveloping Stamford Bridge, their current stadium, to increase its capacity and modernise the facilities. However, the plans have faced various challenges and have not been finalised. Stamford Bridge is another fan-favourite stadium that is in desperate need of some serious renovation.

Selhurst Park (Crystal Palace FC): Crystal Palace FC has proposed a major redevelopment plan for Selhurst Park to increase the stadium's capacity and enhance the matchday experience. The plans were approved, and construction was expected to start in 2020, but it was delayed due to the pandemic.

Hillsborough Stadium (Sheffield Wednesday FC): Hillsborough Stadium, the home ground of Sheffield Wednesday FC, has undergone significant refurbishments in the past. However, further renovations or rebuilding plans may have been discussed in recent years. The stadium itself has great potential to become one of the top grounds in the UK, with some renovations.

Dean Court (AFC Bournemouth): Dean Court, currently known as the Vitality Stadium for sponsorship purposes, is a football stadium in Kings Park, Boscombe, a suburb of Bournemouth. The Cherries have become an established top flight team in recent years, but they don't have a world class stadium. If they are to remain a top club, then a new stadium is a must.

Old Trafford (Manchester United): Old Trafford has been on the wane for a number of years, now. The iconic stadium has had major leaks in the roof, and an infestation of rats. Old Trafford is colossal and iconic, but if United are to move forward as a modern day football club, the stadium will need some major redevelopment, or knocking down completely.

These are just a few examples, and there may be other football grounds in the United Kingdom that have been considered for rebuilding or renovation. Only time will tell to see how many of these plans come into full fruition...
