One Direction members: Who has the best solo career?

Formed in 2010, One Direction was the biggest musical act on the planet! Its five members, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, rose to fame after the group finished third on the seventh season of the British singing competition show "The X Factor".

After the show, One Direction signed with Simon Cowell's record label, Syco Music, and released their debut album "Up All Night" in 2011. The album was a commercial success, reaching number one in multiple countries.

Over the next few years, One Direction released several more successful albums, including "Take Me Home", "Midnight Memories", and "Made in the A.M.". They became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, selling over 70 million records worldwide.

In 2015, Zayn Malik left the band to pursue a solo career, and One Direction announced that they would be taking a hiatus starting in 2016. Although the members have pursued solo careers, One Direction remains one of the most popular and influential boy bands of all time.

Here, we look at each of their solo careers, and rank them from worst to best...

5. Luis Tomlinson

After One Direction went on hiatus in 2016, Louis began working on his solo music career. He released his debut solo single, "Just Hold On," in collaboration with American DJ Steve Aoki in December 2016. The single debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart and was a commercial success.

Since then, Louis has released several successful singles, including "Back to You" (featuring Bebe Rexha), "Miss You", and "Two of Us". He released his debut solo album, "Walls", in January 2020.

Although Louis has had a successful solo career, he's hardly setting the music scene alight. Tomlinson seems to be pacing along at a steady pace.

4. Liam Payne

After One Direction went on hiatus in 2016, Liam signed a solo recording contract with Capitol Records. He released his debut solo single, "Strip That Down," in May 2017, which peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart and number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Since then, Liam has released several successful singles, including "Bedroom Floor", "For You" (a collaboration with Rita Ora), and "Stack It Up" (featuring American rapper A Boogie wit da Hoodie). He released his debut solo album, "LP1", in December 2019.

Liam has gone down the dance, upbeat, chart-friendly route, which, to be fair, he's done a half decent job at. However, we can't help but think he's missed an opportunity to explore a more soulful style of music, with his tone of voice.

3. Niall Horan

In 2016, Niall announced that he had signed a solo recording contract with Capitol Records. He released his debut solo single "This Town" in September 2016, which peaked at number 9 on the UK Singles Chart. In 2017, he released his debut solo album "Flicker", which debuted at number one on the Irish and US Billboard 200 charts.

Since then, Niall has released several successful singles, including "Slow Hands", "Too Much to Ask", and "Nice to Meet Ya". He has also embarked on several successful tours, both as a solo artist and with One Direction. Niall is known for his guitar playing and his soulful, folk-influenced sound.

To be fair to Niall, he's done some pretty good things since the break up of One Direction. His soft folk-style music is perfectly suited to his voice and his overall style and tone. It works for him, and it's proved to be a great success.

2. Zayn Malik

In March 2015, Zayn left One Direction to pursue a solo career. He signed a solo recording contract with RCA Records and released his debut solo album, "Mind of Mine," in March 2016. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart, and featured the hit singles "Pillowtalk" and "Like I Would."

Since then, Zayn has released two more solo albums, "Icarus Falls" in 2018 and "Nobody Is Listening" in 2021. He has also collaborated with several other artists, including Taylor Swift, Sia, and PARTYNEXTDOOR.

It could easily be argued that Zayn has the best voice of anyone in One Direction, so a popular solo career was always going to be on the cards. Up until recently, Zayn was topping this list, but after some time away from the spotlight, he's been demoted to number 2...

1. Harry Styles

After One Direction went on hiatus in 2016, Harry pursued a solo music career. He released his debut solo single, "Sign of the Times," in April 2017, which debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart and was a commercial success.

Harry has since released two solo albums, "Harry Styles" in 2017 and "Fine Line" in 2019. Both albums received critical acclaim and commercial success, with "Fine Line" debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200.

There could only be one winner, and that was always going to be Harry Styles. Since going solo, Styles has experimented with a number of stones and musical styles that have all worked, leading him to where he is today.

He's not just the most successful solo artist of the former One Direction members, but he's also one of the most successful solo artists in he world. Harry is simply smashing it out of the park!
