What is depression, and how to know if you have it?

Depression, also known as major depressive disorder or clinical depression, is a mood disorder with a group of symptoms including constant sadness or lack of interest in life.

Most of us get down from time to time, and that is perfectly normal, however, but depression, as an illness, can affect a person more frequently, and randomly. This is when it becomes an illness. 

Your doctor can test you for depression and help manage your symptoms. If your depression goes untreated, it may get worse and last for months, even years. That is why is is important to get it diagnosed and treated, as soon as possible, 

Unfortunately, about half the people who have depression never get diagnosed or treated. So, in this article, we'll go through some key signs/symptoms that help identify depression. 

Feeling of hopelessness

Feeling hopeless is a key sign that you might be depressed. Feeling hopeless, lacking in self-worth, and being cynical towards pretty much everything, is a key sign that you could be depressed. 

Lacking sleep 

Insomnia is something that a lot of people with depression have. If you are struggling to sleep, then this could be sign that you are depressed. 

Cranky and irritable 

Feeling cranky and emotionally sensitive to even the littlest of things, is a key symptom of depression. If you're feeling a bit short-fused, then it could well be that you are depressed. 

Lack of interest in life

Lots of people who are depressed lack any sort of interest in things that you would typically enjoy, such as sex, hobbies, work etc. This can be a big clue that you are depressed. 

Lack of appetite (or overeating) 

If you find yourself lacking an appetite, then this in itself is a key symptom of depression. But, for some people, dealing with depression can work in the opposite way, by overeating. 

Suicidal thoughts 

For more extreme cases of depression, you may experience suicidal thoughts, and this should not be taken lightly. If this happening with you, then seek help immediately. 

Drinking excessively 

If you find yourself drinking a lot more, particularly away from your social circles, then this is often a sign that you are depressed. Drinking alcohol, or doing drugs, is often an attempted escape from the feeling of being depressed.  

Feeling fatigued

If you're feeling tired with constant aches and pains, then it's a strong sign that you could well be depressed. Depression doesn't just destroy a person mentally - it can also play havoc with a person, physically. 

Always thinking about the past

If you're constantly thinking about the past, and how much better things were in the good old days, then that's a key sign of self-inflicted depression. This symptom could also be connected to a midlife crisis.

Hair loss is one of the most soul-destroying things any person can go through in life. 2 in 3 men experience hair loss by the age of 40, and the vast majority of those men feel depressed about it.
