The Top 10 Welsh Football Players of All Time

With the recent retirement of Welsh football legend, Gareth Bale, we thought we'd take a look through the years of some of the greatest ever Wales football players, and see where Bale fits into that list.

So, without further ado, here are our top 10 greatest ever Welsh football players...

10. Ivor Allchurch

Ivor John Allchurch MBE was a Welsh professional footballer who played for Swansea Town, Newcastle United and Cardiff City, as well as the Wales national football team. He starred in the 1958 word cup, and was a footballer ahead of his time, blessed with a balanced mix of pace and strength.

9. Ashley Williams

Ashley Williams captained Wales to the semi finals in the European Championships in 2016. The former centre back was one of the great Welsh leaders, marshalling his defence. He enjoyed successful spells with Swansea City and Everton.

8. Jack Kelsey

Alfred John "Jack" Kelsey was a Welsh international football goalkeeper, who also played for Arsenal. He is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers to play for Wales, and one of the best that Britain has ever produced. Kelsey played for Wales in the 1958 world cup.

7. Aaron Ramsey

Former Arsenal and Juventus star, Aaron Ramsey, has been one of the best modern day Welsh football players, appearing in three major tournaments. In his prime, Ramsey was a top Premier League midfielder with Arsenal, before starring for Juventus in Serie A. ~

6. Mark Hughes

The former Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich player, Mark Hughes, was one of the best strikers of the late 80s and early 90s. Blessed with power, balance, and strength, Hughes was a formidable force in his prime, for both Wales and Manchester United.

5. Ian Rush

Ian Rush's club career would suggest that he was the most naturally gifted Welsh goal scorer of all time. The Liverpool legend was the ultimate finisher for club and country, and is still regarded as one of the great strikers of his generation.

4. Neville Southall

'Big Nev' isn't just one of the great Welsh players, but he was, in his prime, one of the top goal keepers in the world. Southall was an excellent shot stopper, with great agility, and anticipation. Everton regard him as their greatest keeper.

3. Ryan Giggs

Some Welsh fans will have Ryan Giggs at the top of this list, but for us, he just falls short, and that's not because of his playing ability. Giggs will be remembered as a Manchester United legend, rather than a Welsh one, and rightly so. If he'd shown a bit more commitment to Wales, then he may have been a tad higher on this list.

2. Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale has been a phenomenon, and without question the greatest modern day Welsh football player. His goals, trophies and contributions for Real Madrid are mightily impressive, but it's also his performances and commitment to Wales that made him so popular with the Welsh fans. Bale has led Wales to three major tournaments, including their first world cup appearance since 1958.His legacy is cemented, and for many, he's the greatest ever.

1. John Charles

There was only one man who could ever challenge Gareth Bale, and that was the 'Gentle Giant' himself, John Charles. He was a versatile footballer who was capable of playing both as a striker and as a defender. As a forward, he was renowned for being a prolific goal scorer, as he was capable of scoring with either foot, courtesy of his powerful and accurate shot; due to his height, physique, and strength, as well as his heading power and accuracy, he also excelled in the air, which made him an aerial goal threat.

Best known for his first stint at Leeds United and Juventus, as well as his appearances in the 1958 world cup, Charles was rated by many as the greatest all-round footballer ever to come from Britain.
