For the last time, the FIFA World Cup will contain 32 teams, until it is expanded to 48 teams in 2026. So, we look at the 32 competing teams at the Qatar World Cup, and go through the greatest ever footballer to play for these nations.

Some picks may surprise you, whilst others are dead certainties. So, without further ado, here are the best football stars to ever play for each nation of the 2022 world cup...

Qatar - Mansour Muftah

Mansour Muftah is played as a forward for Qatar in the 1970s to the 1990s. He was the top scorer in the Qatar Stars League a record seven times, as well as being the top scorer for the Qatar national team till this day with 42 goals in only 81 appearances. 

Ecuador - Alberto Spencer

George Best is probably the best player to have never played at a world cup, but Alberto Spencer certainly wouldn't be far behind, with that tag. A prolific poacher inside the penalty area, it was with Uruguayan club Penarol that he really made a name for himself, scoring a hefty 326 goals during his almost 10-year stint in Montevideo.

Netherlands revolutionised attacking football in the 1970s, with Johan Cruyff being at the centre of it all. The talented Dutchman is widely considered to be one of the greatest players of all time, and his success as a player (and coach) will live long in the history books. 

England - Bobby Charlton 

England have had some real talent through the years, with Bobby Moore, Paul Gascoigne, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney being some of the main contenders for this tag, but Bobby Charlton gets the nod from us. The world cup winner had just about everything you could want in an attacker, strength, speed, skill, and a great eye for goal. 

Iran - Ali Daei

Ali Daei was a clinical striker, and he was the captain of the Iranian national team between 2000 and 2006. Daei played in the German Bundesliga for Arminia Bielefeld, Bayern Munich and Hertha Berlin. He is regarded as one of the greatest Asian footballers of all time.

USA - Landon Donovan

Landon Donovan is widely regarded by fans as America's best "soccer" player. The speedy attacker had spells in Europe with Bayer Leverkusen and Everton, but made his biggest impact at LA Galaxy, where he scored 112 goals. 

Wales - Gareth Bale

There were few better than Gareth Bale from 2012-2016. The former Real Madrid star was on another level, at times. The record Wales goal scorer enjoyed a successful Euro 2016 campaign, scoring three goals, and leading Wales to the semi finals.

Sorry, Messi, but until you win a world cup, there's only one name on this list. Diego Maradona wasn't just Argentina's greatest ever player, but he's also one of the true football greats of all time. Maradona is still the only player to practically win a world cup single-handedly (in 1986). 

Saudi Arabia - Majed Abdullah

Majed Abdullah is without doubt the greatest ever Saudi player, in terms of quality on the pitch and the legacy he left behind. He scored an impressive 72 goals for Saudi Arabia, and in 1984, 1985 and 1986, he was named Asian Football Player of the Year. 

Mexico - Hugo Sanchez 

In the eyes of the Mexican people, Real Madrid legend, Hugo Sanchez, is one of the greatest strikers to ever exist. Sanchez was given the title of best CONCACAF player of the twentieth century by the International Football Federation of History and Statistics. He is, by far, the greatest Mexican to ever play the sport of football. 

Poland - Zbigniew Boniek

Edging out Robert Lewandowski, Polish legend, Zbigniew Boniek, gets our vote for the best ever Poland player. He was a midfielder who could also play on the right flank, and as a second striker. In 2004, Pelé named him in his list of the 100 greatest living football players, which is quite a compliment. Boniek scored twenty-four goals for Poland, and appeared in three straight World Cups.

France - Zinedine Zidane 

Some may call for Platini as the greatest ever French footballer, but when you look at Zidane's CV, it's clear that he is far and away the greatest to ever wear the blue shirt of France.  Zidane won a world cup, scoring twice in the 1998 final, and a European Championship win, too. Add a stunning winning goal in the Champions League final with Real Madrid, and you have yourself one of the greatest players to ever live.

Australia - Mark Viduka 

Mark Viduka was a great centre forward, playing in the Premier League for a number of successful years with Leeds, Middlesbrough and Newcastle. He captained the Australia national team to the Round of 16 at the 2006 FIFA World Cup which remains their best ever performance to date. His four goals in the UEFA Champions League are the most scored by any Australian player.

Denmark - Michael Laudrup

Michael Laudrup is considered to be one of the greatest players of all time. He is the older brother of fellow retired footballer Brian Laudrup. Laudrup had successful spells are Juventus, Barcelona, and Real Madrid, and also won the 1992 European Championships with Denmark.

Nabil Maâloul is a Tunisian football coach and former player who is currently managing Espérance de Tunis. Maâloul was capped 74 times for his country, and participated in 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. He spent most of his playing career with his home club, ES Tunis and won it a historic treble as a coach in 2011.

Spain - Andres Iniesta 

Andrés Iniesta is widely regarded as Spain's greatest ever player. Considered one of the greatest midfielders of all time, Iniesta has spent most of his career at Barcelona, where he served as the captain for three seasons. He also scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final. 

Costa Rica - Paulo Wanchope 

Paulo Wanchope is a Costa Rican football coach and former professional footballer As a player he was a striker who notably played in the Premier League for Derby County, West Ham United and Manchester City. He is widely regarded as one of the best players to come from the middle America region. 

Germany - Franz Beckenbauer

Franz Beckenbauer is regarded as one of the best defenders of all time. In his playing career he was nicknamed Der Kaiser because of his elegant style, dominance and leadership on the field, and also as his first name "Franz" is reminiscent of the Austrian emperors. Beckenbauer won the world cup as a player (1974) and a coach (1990). 

Japan - Hidetoshi Nakata

Hidetoshi Nakata played as a midfielder, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest Asian players of all time. Nakata had an excellent spell at the top flight, with the likes of Roma, Parma, and Bolton. He also played in three world cups (1998, 2002, and 2006).

Belgium - Marc Wilmots 

Marc Robert Wilmots was as attacking midfielder, he won trophies with KV Mechelen, Standard Liège and Schalke 04. He also represented the Belgium national team on 70 occasions, scoring 28 goals. Wilmots edges out the likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, and Romelu Lukaku. 

Canada - Alphonso Davies 

Canada haven't been blessed with many superstars of the game, but Bayern Munich left back, Alphonso Davies, is certainly making a name for himself. He is regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world due to his pace, dribbling and creativity. Davies has already won the Bundesliga and Champions League, at just 22 years of age.

Mustapha Hadji has to be the best Moroccan footballer of all time. He was named the 50th greatest African player of all time by the African football expert Ed Dove, and had a great playing career with the likes of Sporting Lisbon, Deportivo La Caruna, Coventry City, Aston Villa, and Espanyol. 

Croatia - Luka Modric 

Luka Modrić is widely regarded as Croatia's finest ever player. The Real Madrid star, and captain of the Croatia national team, guided his nation to the world cup final in 2018, winning the golden ball, and the Ballon D'or . 

Brazil - Pele 

There's not much debate about this one. Brazil have been blessed with the likes of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zico, Kaka, Carlos Alberto, and so many others, but their number one, and many people's greatest football player of all time, is the three time world cup winner, Pele. 

Serbia - Siniša Mihajlović

In his prime, SiniÅ¡a Mihajlović was one of the best players in the world. During his career as a footballer, he played as a defender or midfielder for the likes of Lazio and Inter Milan, when Italian football was the strongest on the planet. 

Switzerland - Alexander Frei

Alexander Frei, or Alex Frei, is a Swiss professional football coach and a former player who played as a forward. He is currently the manager of Basel. Frei enjoyed much success as a player with Basel and German giants Borussia Dortmund. 

Cameroon - Samuel Eto'o

Samuel Eto'o is without question Cameroon's finest ever footballer. The prolific striker won every trophy there is to win in the club game, with notable successes at Barcelona and Inter Milan, in particular.

Ghana - Michael Essien 

Michael Essien is a Ghanaian former professional footballer who played as a midfielder and is currently a member of Danish Superliga club Nordsjælland's coaching staff. He was also capped for the Ghana national team more than 50 times, scoring 9 goals. Essien was one of the true great holding midfield players, with particular success at Chelsea and Real Madrid. 

Uruguay - Juan Alberto "Pepe" Schiaffino

Juan Alberto "Pepe" Schiaffino was an Italian-Uruguayan football player who played as an attacking midfielder or forward. A highly skilful and creative playmaker, at club level, he played for CA Peñarol in Uruguay, and for A.C. Milan, and Roma in Italy. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. 

South Korea - Son Heung-min

Born in Chuncheon, Gangwon, South Korea, Son Heung-min is possibly the best Korean soccer player of all time. Playing brilliantly as a forward for Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, Son is currently regarded as one of the top players in the world.
