Greatest Ever UEFA Champions League XI

Champions League Immortals

Since its formation in 1993, the UEFA Champions League has hosted some of the world's greatest ever players from all four corners of the world. The competition is widely regarded as the ultimate prize in club football.
BT Sport are currently doing a Champions League Immortals show, whereby some of the game's former players pick their ultimate Champions League XI. So, here at Green Beans, we thought we'd jump in on the action, and pick our own Champions League XI.

So, without further ado, here is the Green Beans Champions League XI.

Champions League Immortals

We've gone for a 4-3-3 formation.

Goal Keeper - Manuel Neuer

We could have gone for a number of goalkeepers, like Schmeichel, Buffon, Casillas, and Cech, to name a few, but we decided on the German powerhouse, Neuer, due to his consistency, longevity, and the fact he's won the competition twice with Bayern Munich, and even managed a semi final place with his former club, Schalke.

Right Back - Cafu

Cafu is perhaps the greatest right back on his generation, and one of the greats of all time. He had a pretty decent Champions League pedigree, too, winning the competition with AC Milan in 2007. Marcello, Alves and Neville were all in with a shout for this spot, but Cafu is our number 1 right back.

Centre Back - Serio Ramos

What a player Serigo Ramos has been for Real Madrid. Four Champions League wins, and a hat full of goals to go with his immense tackling at the back. Think what you like about Ramos, but his stats tell you everything you need to know. One of the true Champions League greats.

Centre Back - Paolo Maldini

Regarded by many as the greatest defender of all time, Paolo Maldini is a legend in his own right. With three Champions League wins, all with AC Milan, Maldini adapted and excelled through various eras of the game.

Left Back - Roberto Carlos

This Brazilian icon was one of the most enjoyable players to watch. Solid defensively, and potent in attack, the little wing-back could also score the odd goal, too. Carlos won three Champions Leagues with Real Madrid, including one with the famous Galacticos.

Midfield - Andrea Pirlo

One of the greatest passers of his generation, and widely regarded as one of Italy's finest ever players, play-making sensation Andrea Pirlo walks straight into this team. The two time Champions League winner with AC Milan controls and dictates this team from the middle of the park.

Midfield - Andres Iniesta

Andres Iniesta was never going to miss out on this team. The pass master was an amazing player for both golden generations of Barcelona and Spain. Had it not been for the likes of Messi and Ronaldo, you would think that Iniesta would have won multiple Ballon d'Or awards.

Midfield - Zinedine Zidane

The French maestro was one of the few greats who produced his brilliance on the international stage, as well as for his club(s). World cup and European Championship winner with France, Zidane also produced the goods for Juventus and Real Madrid, scoring what is widely regarded as the greatest ever Champions League final goal for Los Blancos against Bayer Leverkusen.

Left Side Attack - Lionel Messi

The second highest goal scorer in the competition, with four Champions League wins to boot, there's really not much else one can say about Lionel Messi. Definitely one of the game's all-time greats.

Right Side Attack - Ronaldinho

The Brazilian magicians spell at the top wasn't long, but for 2-3 seasons from 2003-2006 at Barcelona, Ronaldinho was far and away the greatest player on the planet. A fine win in 2006 cemented his place as one of the competition's true greats.

Centre Forward - Cristiano Ronaldo

The highest scorer in the history of the competition, and an incredible five Champions League wins with two different clubs, Cristiano Ronaldo is Mr. Champions League. There is no better man at breaking records than the imperious Ronaldo. What he has achieved in the Champions League is nothing short of remarkable.
