Ways To Stop Hair Loss in Summer

Not a lot of people know it, but many of us tend to shed a lot more during summer season. The hotter months of the year can present all kinds of headaches for men and women, with the most common one being hair loss.

There are a few key factors that contribute to the excessive shedding during summer time, but the most common cause is seasonal hair loss.

Seasonal hair shedding generally lasts 2-3 months. It usually begins in summer, heightens in fall and can linger around through winter. During wintertime, Telogen levels are the lowest as growth slowly begins again.

However, some of us experience the bulk of hair fall during late summer, which is why is is absolutely vital to start tackling the issue as early as possible.

Here, in no particular order, we go through some key ways in which you can reduce hair shedding during summer season, and get back to growing normal, fuller, stronger hair.

Protect your strands

Many people suffer from excessive hair shedding because of the brutal conditions of summer season. The sun can cause serious damage to the hair, causing it to break, and fall out.

Be sure to get yourself a good SPF lotion/cream for your hair. Yes, that's right, SPF creams and lotions are not just for the skin, as they can also be used on the hair.  A good lotion will keep your hair full of moisture, hydrated, and free from UV sunlight damage.

Shampoo less

Over shampooing your hair can lead to unnecessary hair fall, so just be sure to reduce your shampoo washing to around once or twice a week. You can wet wash your hair on other occasions, but only use shampoo sparingly.

To counter greasiness, you can use dry shampoo, or even talcum powder, to keep your hair looking and smelling fresh. Your hair will also look fuller and less greasy, and it will be less likely to shed.

Reduce sweating

We sweat much more during the hotter part of the year, and excessive sweating can lead to damage and breakage of the hair, which in turn, leads to shedding.

Now, you may not be able to stop sweating completely, but there are some easy ways that you can reduce it. Firstly, apply antiperspirant before bed. Antiperspirants work by blocking the sweat ducts so that the sweat can't reach the surface of our skin. This will bode you well for the day ahead.

Wear breathable fabrics. This will allow air to circulate around your skin, keeping it fresh, cool, and less likely to sweat. Avoid certain foods that may cause you to sweat excessively, and wear hats, when and where possible. Shading your strands is better than exposing them to the sun for long periods of time.

Avoid heat based styling products

If you are an avid user of heat based styling products like blow dryers and hair straighteners, then try, at the very least, to reduce using them. These types of products can be an absolute nightmare for the hair, especially during summer season.

If you need to use a blow dryer, then dry your hair on a cooler mode. It will definitely benefit your strands in the long run.

Apply protein cream

If there's one thing your hair needs and thrives on, it's protein. An increasing amount of men and women are using protein creams and lotions on their hair to give it strength and endurance, particularly during summer season.

A good protein cream can counter hair loss, protect the hair, and strengthen hair growth. Just be sure to go for a natural cream that is free from chemicals and unnatural ingredients.

Let your hair down

Tying your hair into a knot or a ponytail does not cause hair loss, but it can cause damage and breakage to the strands, particularly in the summer months. This is far from ideal if you are already prone to hair loss, or if you have naturally thin hair.

Let your hair down, when possible, or, if you need to tie it back, then make sure you don't tie it so tightly. Wear your hair as loose as possible and let it breathe throughout the summer months.

Supplement your hair

If you are already prone to hair loss, are suffering from male/female pattern baldness, or have naturally thin textured hair, then hair supplementation should be a key staple in your daily hair care routine.
