In this second part of our 'Best Video Games of The Decade' instalment, we thought we'd track back a couple decades and rate our top 10 most iconic video games of the 1990s.  With the emergence of the Nintendo64, XBox and the Play Station, this was set to become the most intriguing decade yet...


10. Super Mario World (1990)

Super Mario World, originally known in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 4, is a 1990 platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo.  Another outstanding instalment of the Super Mario franchise, but much of the hard work was already built in the previous three games.


9. Metal Gear Solid (1998)

Metal Gear Solid is an action-adventure stealth video game produced by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and released for the PlayStation in 1998.  This hugely popular game paved the way for future games of this genre.



8. Doom (1993)

Doom was a popular 1993 science fiction horror-themed first-person shooter (FPS) video game by id Software. It is considered one of the most significant and influential titles in video game history, for having helped to pioneer the now-ubiquitous first-person shooter.


7. Resident Evil (1996)

Resident Evil, known in Japan as Bio Hazard, is a survival horror video game developed and released by Capcom originally for the PlayStation in 1996, and is the first game in the Resident Evil series.  This game was so popular that they even made a bunch of movies with the same title.



6. Mortal Kombat (1992)

Mortal Kombat is an arcade fighting game developed and published by Midway in 1992 as the first title in the Mortal Kombat series. It was subsequently released by Acclaim Entertainment for nearly every home video game platform of the time. This was probably the second most influential 'beat 'em up' game in history.



5. Spyro The Dragon (1998)

Spyro the Dragon is a platform video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game was released for the PlayStation in September 1998, and was an immediate hit. This was one of the most influential 3D platform games of its era.



4. Super Mario Kart (1992)

Super Mario Kart is a 1992 go-kart racing video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo game console.  This masterpiece took the Super Mario Bros. franchise to a completely new level, and this addition is still considered by many as the greatest video game of all time. 


3. Golden Eye (1997)

GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Rare and based on the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye. It was released for the Nintendo 64 video game console in August 1997.  This game really made you feel like you were on a 007 mission, and during its release, it was the most popular, must-have video game on the planet.  Golden Eye paved the way for some exciting games of this genre, making it one of the most important games ever made.


2. Street Fighter II (1991)

Street Fighter II was a competitive fighting game originally released for the arcades in 1991. It is the second entry in the Street Fighter series and the arcade sequel to the original Street Fighter released in 1987.  This game took one-on-one fighting games to a completely new level, and ended up being one of the most sought-after games ever released in the early 90s.  This is still regarded by many as the greatest figthing game ever made.


1. Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)

Sonic the Hedgehog was a beautifully crafted platform video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis console. The game was first released in North America in June 1991, and in PAL regions and Japan the following month.  The Sonic franchise was the first of its kind to rival the Super Mario Bros. powerhouse, creating a Nintendo vs Sega divide.  It matters little whether you are Mario or Sonic - they both represent a whole generation of video gamers, and both legacies still continue.
