Hair Loss Awareness Month: What Does It Mean?

National days and events have become the norm over the past few years, and there seems to be a national day for pretty much anything -- from National Cookie Day, to National I love Food Day.  There's something for everyone.

As we approach another August, we are also approaching Hair Loss Awareness Month.  That's right, we're not just talking about a day, or even a week, but a whole month that is dedicated to one cause.

The full month of August marks Hair Loss Awareness month, and here, we'll go into a bit more detail about what it all means, and how you and your hair can benefit from it most.  So, here are 10 interesting facts about Hair Loss that may surprise you...

1. Hair loss is the number one concern

Humans worry about pretty much anything and everything, but hair loss tops the list. In a recent survey, a whopping 62% of male and female participants stated that losing their hair was their biggest physical concern, with weight/body shape concerns in second (17%), and skin issues in third (11%).

2. It's normal to lose 100 hairs a day

If you're constantly finding hairs on your pillow in the morning, or in the shower at night, then fear not, because it is perfectly normal to lose up to 100 hairs every single day!  It only becomes a problem when you are not replacing the shedded hairs with new ones.

3. Over 60 percent of men suffer from baldness before the age of 40

It seems pretty crazy, but it's true -- up to 60 percent of men will suffer from some form of hair loss by the time they reach their 40th birthday. And even more depressingly, 80 percent of men will experience some from of hair loss by the age of 65.

4. Over 40 percent of women suffer from thinning hair by the age of 40

Women suffer from hair loss too, and nearly half of the female population notice thinning hair by the time they reach the age of 40. This stat is set to double by the time they reach the age of 65, which is alarming in itself.

5. The hair loss treatment market exceeds £2 billion

Treating hair loss comes at a cost, and it's a mega bucks business. Without a cure for the problem, there will always be an increase in treatments.  Some are better than others, but ultimately, none are cures. Treating your hair can be a complex process, so be sure to spend your hard earned cash on the right treatment for you.

6. Heredity is the most common cause of hair loss

It is known medically as “androgenetic alopecia," and unfortunately there's nothing much you can do about it.  Heredity hair loss is passed through the genes, and unless you tackle the problem early, you'll not likely to keep your hair for long.  Hereditary baldness is not caused by the hair falling out, but rather by normal hair gradually being replaced by finer, thinner hairs

7. You must lose over 50 percent of hair on your scalp before it is noticeable

Yes, that's right, in order for people to notice your hair thinning, you'd have to lose at least 50 percent of your hair. So, fear not, you might be losing your hair at a rapid pace, but if you can find a treatment that helps slow down the shedding, you'll be in with a realistic chance of keeping your hair for longer.

8. There are many types of baldness

Many people fail to realise that there are actually many different types of causes for hair loss. Many of these lesser known hair loss types are actually temporary, which include seasonal hair loss, post-partum hair loss, and hair loss caused by an illness, or treatments.

9. Hair loss can be treated

Although there is no cure for baldness, there are many treatments on the market than can slow down and even stop the hair loss process.  Treatments of this nature tend to work different from person to person, and some can even help stimulate hair growth.

10. Multi-vitamin supplements are the most popular natural treatment for baldness

With more and more people looking to avoid the harsh treatment drugs that come with nasty side-effects, the natural alternative is multi-vitamin hair supplements.  The market for these supplements is growing, and they are helping millions of men and women combat hair loss, both safely and effectively.
